Red Rooster Coffee Blends Ranked in Top 30 Coffees of 2020

Floyd County, VA – Two of Red Rooster Coffee Roaster’s coffee blends were ranked in the Top 30 Coffees of 2020 by Coffee Review. Coffee Review is “the world’s most widely read and influential coffee buying guide” with a goal “to point readers to the best coffees in the world.”

Coffee Review described this Ethiopia Shantawene Washed blend as “an exceptional washed-process Sidama cup evoking a garden in the spring, vivid with complex sweet-spicy florals.” Read their full review here.




#20 All Rise (in Collaboration with RND Coffee)
Red Rooster collaborated with RND Coffee in Roanoke to create the All Rise blend. Proceeds from All Rise “benefit Dream Corps and the work they do driving criminal justice reform, building a greener economy, and creating equity in the tech industry.” Coffee Review thought All Rise was “bright, sweet, tart, chocolaty and floral – delicious and worthy.” Read their full review here.

Virginia Tech Ranked #25 for Undergraduate Entrepreneurship

Montgomery County, VA – Virginia Tech ranked #25 on the list of Top Undergraduate Schools for Entrepreneurship by The Princeton Review and Entrepreneur magazine. The 2021 list was created by evaluating data from a “survey of more than 300 schools with offerings in entrepreneurship studies”.

According to the list, which was posted in its entirety on Entrepreneur.com, one way that Virginia Tech sets themselves apart from other universities is:

“We believe great companies can start and scale anywhere, aided by the fact that startups in emerging venture communities are often more capital efficient, offer a lower cost of doing business and attract talent looking for better quality of life. Pulaski County Awarded SolSmart Gold Designation

Pulaski County Awarded SolSmart Gold Designation

Pulaski County, VA – Pulaski County was recently awarded a SolSmart Gold designation. SolSmart is a nationwide program that “recognizes cities, counties, and regional organizations for making it faster, easier, and more affordable to go solar.” SolSmart has only awarded 139 Gold designations across the country, and Pulaski County is one of only three communities in Virginia to achieve that designation.

According to County Administrator Jonathan Sweet, “this Gold designation further demonstrates that [Pulaski County has] made it easier and more affordable for citizens and business[es] to move to solar.”

Floyd Voted Top Tiny Adventure Town 2020

Floyd County, VA – Floyd was voted the Top Tiny Adventure Town for 2020 by readers of Blue Ridge Outdoors magazine. The magazine “asked [their] readers to select the region’s best adventure hubs in [the] 10th annual Top Adventure Towns contest, which featured 100 towns across the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast competing for the title of best outdoor burg.”

Floyd was the winner of the “Tiny Town” category, for towns with populations less than 3,000. Here’s what Blue Ridge Outdoors had to say about Floyd:

Exelaration Ranked #3 Tech Internship by Vault

Montgomery County, VA – Exelaration was ranked the #3 Tech & Engineering Internship for 2021 by Vault. Vault is nationally known for ranking “the top internship programs in various industries in diversity, quality of life, and overall best to work for.” Rankings are determined through surveys of current and past interns.

Exelaration, which runs the Blacksburg-based Exelaration Center (XC), trains interns for careers in technology by giving them real-world experiences on projects for companies such as the Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance and Medeco. According to the company, “The Exelaration Center (XC) addresses the STEM skills shortage by connecting young people of varied backgrounds with the technology workforce.”

Pulaski is 2nd Most Affordable Place to Buy a Home in VA

Pulaski County, VASmartAsset.com has named Pulaski the second most affordable place to buy a home in Virginia for 2020. The town moved up six spots from 2019, when they were named eighth most affordable place to buy a home in the state.

To compile the list, SmartAsset.com calculated the affordability of each city in the U.S. with a population greater than 5,000. According to the study, “The most affordable places were those in which total housing costs were smallest compared to the median income in each area.”

MCPS Recognized as a “School Division of Innovation” by VA Board of Education

MCPS Named “School Division of Innovation” by VA Board of Education

Montgomery County, VA – Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) was recognized last week as a “School Division of Innovation” by the Virginia Board of Education. MCPS is among the first 15 school divisions across the state to be recognized for “designing and implementing alternatives to traditional instructional practices and school structures that improve student learning and promote college and career readiness, and good citizenship.”

Montgomery County Public Schools was specifically recognized for these innovative programs and practices:

  • Creating and offering new information technology curricula through dual enrollment
  • Creating new associate degree pathways
  • Developing an alternative model for professional studies
  • Embracing and supporting work-based learning experiences

    Radford, VA – Radford University was ranked the #33 Regional University in the South by U.S. News and World Report. The publication released their “2021 U.S. News Best Colleges” rankings in September 2020.

    Radford also ranked in a number of other categories for Southern Regional Universities. U.S. News & World Report defines a regional university as one that “offer[s] a full range of undergraduate programs and some master’s programs but few doctoral programs.”
