Montgomery County, VA – Cardinal News recently highlighted the significant role played by the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute’s (VTTI) Smart Road in advancing automotive safety over the past two decades. Maintained and constructed by the Virginia Department of Transportation, the Smart Road features various research systems, such as advanced sensors, multiple pavement types, lighting systems, weather-making towers, optical fiber networks, and differential GPS broadcast capabilities. Spanning over 12 miles, the road encompasses a highway, a rural road section, and a reconfigurable street that can be designed for a variety of scenarios.
