Virginia Tech Drone Research Boosts National Security

Montgomery County, VACardinal News recently reported that researchers at Virginia Tech are working to advance and research technologies that can detect, identify and neutralize unauthorized uncrewed aerial systems. The university’s Mid-Atlantic Aviation Partnership is partnering with Virginia Tech’s National Security Institute to improve drone mitigation systems. These teams are developing indoor and outdoor testing facilities expected to be completed by the end of 2025, which will serve as key hubs for evaluating current detection technologies and enhancing national readiness against potential drone-related threats.

With facilities located at Kentland Farm, just minutes from the main campus, Virginia Tech’s research will help shape how federal, state, and local authorities respond to drone sightings near critical infrastructure. The project is working to close major gaps in drone security by testing systems that can overcome the limitations of radar, infrared, and acoustic tracking.

Through Virginia Tech, Virginia’s New River Valley offers one of only seven FAA-designated Uncrewed Aircraft System test sites. This powerful resource places the NRV at the center of advancement in the uncrewed industry. Discover how the NRV is navigating the skies of drone innovation here.
