NRV Passenger Rail Project Breaks Ground

New River Valley, VA – Governor Glenn Youngkin visited Christiansburg on April 24th, 2025 to break ground on the New River Valley Rail Project marking a significant milestone for Virginia’s New River Valley. As part of the Virginia Passenger Rail Authority’s (VPRA) Transforming Rail in Virginia initiative, this $264.5 million project will extend passenger service from Roanoke to Christiansburg, providing a critical transportation alternative along the busy I-81 corridor. The new Christiansburg station will be located at the historic Cambria site, with construction expected to be completed by 2027.

The rail extension will include vital infrastructure improvements such as a station platform with a canopy, enhanced track signaling, access roads and parking lots, and a layover facility in Radford. This major transportation initiative was made possible through strong collaboration between VPRA, Norfolk Southern, Amtrak, the New River Valley Passenger Rail Station Authority, and local and state leaders. The project will not only increase passenger mobility but will also bolster economic development, support tourism, and enhance Norfolk Southern’s freight service in the area.

With two daily roundtrips planned between Christiansburg and Washington, DC, passengers will soon enjoy convenient rail access to destinations throughout the Northeast Corridor. The new station is a symbol of forward momentum for Virginia’s New River Valley, one that sets the stage for future growth and opportunities for its residents.
